Interviews can be nerve-wracking and honestly quite daunting. The Freelancer Network is here to help you present your best self during an interview, whether this is on the phone, in person or via video call.

Prepare and Revise

Make sure you know the role you’re applying for inside out so you’re not caught off guard with any questions. It’s a good idea to write out any experience you have had beforehand and use the STAR technique to apply your experience to any skills questions. Preparing for your interview will help calm your nerves as the hard part is almost over!

Research

Research your employer and/or the company that you want to work for before your interview. Talking about the company will show your employer that you’re excited not only about the role but being a part of the team and that you’ll fit in. Use this research at the end of the interview to ask your interviewer about the team and company, not only showing your knowledge but helping you make the decision if you would like to work there.

Practice your introduction

Practice introducing yourself to potential employers, this can help you feel more at ease the first time you meet someone and can be used in all interviews. Introduce yourself professionally with your relevant previous experience and then with a more personal fact about yourself to show the interviewer your personal values.

Prepare your outfit

Prepare your outfit at least the day before your interview so you can avoid any last minute mishaps. We’ve all been caught out with a stain on our white shirts, preparing your outfit beforehand means you won’t be caught off guard and you’ll have one last thing to worry about! Even if you’re on a video interview, wearing a full interview outfit can help you feel more prepared and at ease when talking to a potential employer.

Smile!

If you’re at a face-to-face interview or over video camera, smiling can show your potential employer that you’re enthusiastic about the role and the company. It even helps on the phone too! Smiling whilst talking can come through in your voice, helping demonstrate your enthusiasm, just don’t grin the whole time or you may come across a little scary!
